Simple Self-Care for Movers and Shakers

As a busy business owner, leader, and professional (often with work, volunteer, and family life), it can be difficult to prioritize more than truly taking care of yourself. Sometimes this topic is considered a feminine issue. However, even if men don’t often get manicures or pedicures or schedule coffee chats with friends, both men and women need to make sure they rest and restore their own energy. This takes care of themselves.

When we don’t take care of ourselves, we put ourselves in a position to be more vulnerable to stress which results in reduced emotional management and a highway to exhausting the body. While our self-care actions may not make our top 10 list for today’s priorities, it’s time to start adding them to your list! Before we create a list of “ideals,” you need to understand what self-care means to you.

For years my friends and family have admonished me for burning the candle at both ends and needing to take care of myself. Sometimes it’s hard to understand what they mean. I know I’m busy, but I’m doing things that are important to me, that I love, and that I find energy and space for. My friends and family would say space at the cost of my downtime, but sometimes I feel confused about what I’m supposed to be doing. I can’t see just sitting at home reading a book for 3 hours or even an hour, or taking a whole day to go hiking while still trying to do the hobbies I love. It feels like an oxymoron: “Relax and take care of yourself, but don’t schedule anything.” How do you get a massage without booking it and where can I fit it into my busy schedule? Usually, I would reply, “I’m fine.” I have a few self care items scheduled into my day and feel very energized despite my business, but I know I don’t really take care of myself or make time for leisure luxuries, but it seems more stressful to plan that into the day as well .

What eventually caught my attention, as it does for most people, was when my body couldn’t keep up with me the same way it used to. After my second daughter was born, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Hypothyroid. Symptoms should include fatigue, brain fog, body aches, etc. I thought, “What’s new? You just have to get on with it.” The diagnosis really didn’t change anything except increase the concern of my friends and family for me to slow down and take care of myself. Enjoying productivity and getting things done, I maintain a full schedule with 2 jobs, family and a heavy volunteer schedule.

Then, I hit my 40s. While enjoying everything I do, I find a lot of stress comes with the low margins I allow myself. A combination of stress and health is what I attribute to some of the anxiety challenges I started having which eventually resulted in panic attacks. This got my attention. I tried to manage this new challenge with mediation but found it had additional side effects. I’m trying to go back to my year of choice and make an effort to exercise, meditate, journal, quiet time, etc. I began to notice the activity of those who were getting older but looked younger than their peers. that looks old. It was at this time that I began to consider how my low margins helped me do many things but significantly added to my stress load. My stress load contributes to my impaired relief and increased anxiety which then has its own ripple effect.

So maybe you’re still in denial about self-care and someone is telling you that you need to slow down, or maybe you’ve experienced some time on your own and realized the importance of self-care. I believe everyone needs to take care of the body, mind and spirit they have, but speaking to the movers and shakers on the road, you especially need to take care of yourself. You connect with a lot of people, you have an impact and depending on your level of self-care will impact your ability to continue doing what you do as well as the level of positivity you share while you do it. So, how do you do it?

#1) Basics. Foundations are what contribute to your continued sustainability. When we are healthy and young, we can easily take advantage of this health and get away with not doing the basics. The older we get, the more we see the effects of this lack of self-care or their amazing form that takes time. Research and health articles always have the same recommendation:

– SLEEP. Dont lie to yourself. You need 8 hours.

– MOVE. Even walking every day is better than nothing. Get a pedometer. Do 10K steps. Go outside (I live in MN, I know how hard it is.)

– WATER. Drinking your body weight in water is ideal, but for some of us, just more water is a win. Add lemon wedges or whatever helps you get as much as possible each day.

– GREEN. Eat more vegetables and greens (cabbage, spinach, etc.). Honestly, good vegetables are hard for me but the more often you add them to your diet, the easier it becomes.

– ANTIOXIDANT. Either with good foods (turmeric, cinnamon, oregano, blueberries, nuts, etc.) or great supplements.

– BREATHE. Whether it’s classic meditation or just 10 breaths a day, increase your moments to relax, de-stress and fill your body with oxygen.

#2) Restore your Body, Mind and Spirit. I believe there is a difference between a self care checklist and learning to listen to my inner self and intuition for self care. Checklists may be used to help give you ideas, get you started, or allow you to experience different options about what is really needed. Deeper self-care is not about being a slave to a checklist, but rather answering an inner call. For example, if you are thirsty, the body needs water. You can see the drink menu: soda, tea, coffee, juice, water… but you know what your body really needs, you listen to your body and you will know that if you try to drink other options, you will still be thirsty. The body needs water to be refreshed. Likewise in our self-care, it is important to learn how to listen to yourself and listen to what your body, mind, and spirit are asking for.

– Examples of checklists that include activities from common self-care recommendations in your daily and weekly routine:

– Body (helps your body feel healthier): massage, walk outside, eat a salad, exercise, stretch, take a 10-minute break, eat fruit, eat breakfast, drink more water, cut out sugar, get some sun, laugh

– Mind (helps reduce stress and clear the mind to relax): meditation, playing the piano or a musical instrument, reading a book, journaling, making a list, setting boundaries, reading positive quotes and inspiration, de-cluttering, unplugging for hours

– Spirit (encourages the heart, brings joy and inner peace): coffee with friends, listening to music, going out, eating out, reading the Bible, prayer, keep card folders & review, reduce or eliminate toxic and negative people inside your feed, volunteers

– Intuitive Directions. When you can listen to your intuition and inner voice, it will tell you what you need. It might sound like something on a self-care list or it might be completely random. You may not want to do it, but understand how smart your body is and trust that it is giving you good direction in what you need. It might be something like this:

– You have been inside all day on your computer. You feel lethargic and tired. You ask yourself, “What do I need to refill?” GO FOR A WALK.

– You have been feeling unenthusiastic and unmotivated. You ask yourself, “What do I need to refuel?”

– You feel lonely even when you have people around you. You ask yourself, “What do I need to update?” CALL YOUR OLD BFF FOR DRINKS.

– You feel overwhelmed and left behind. You ask yourself “What do I need to de-stress?” MAKING A LIST.

– You feel frustrated and nervous about all your projects. You ask yourself, “What do I need to relax?” LISTEN TO MUSIC AND WALK.

Either way, the point is that there is no right or wrong. It’s not magic. It is listening to your inner self and allowing your body to creatively tell you what it needs. This can sound a bit ‘woo-woo’ and hopefully it’s clear that I’m not talking about anything illegal or inappropriate, but when you get used to listening to your body (by being still and quieting your mind and listening to your heart you), you’ll get useful information that doesn’t come from heads and to-do lists, but rather fueling and uplifting self-care that’s just for you, in this moment and time to support you being where you are. the best!
