If you love to eat chocolate, it can help you lose weight and satisfy your sweet cravings according to a new study in the International Archives of Medicine. Diet and exercise are important to any weight loss plan so German researchers analyzed the effects of chocolate on your diet (Bohannon et al. 2015).
Chocolate has always been one of my favorites when it comes to sweets but it’s good to know that it may also have an effect on fat loss. During the study which lasted several weeks, men and women between the ages of 19-67 were divided into three groups. One group followed a low-carb diet while consuming 42 grams of dark chocolate (81%) per day, the other group followed their normal diet, and the control group followed a strict low-carb diet. In addition to recording their BMI and weight, participants were also asked to rate their sleep quality and mental state.
Surprisingly, people in the chocolate intervention group had the easiest and most successful weight loss. Although there was a delay in the measurable effects of this diet, this group’s weight loss surpassed the results of the low-carb group by 10% after just three weeks. Furthermore, fat loss continued, compared to the low-carb group who saw weight gain after a few weeks. This is a problem with many weight loss programs because individuals usually gain the weight back within weeks of losing it. The fact that weight loss continues after eating dark chocolate is an effect unlike any other.
The chocolate group also found a significant improvement in their physical and mental well-being while blood cholesterol levels decreased. This is to say that people who eat more dark chocolate even sleep better and benefit from a decrease in serious health problems. It’s just something about chocolate that puts me in a good mood while satisfying my sweet tooth which I love the most.
For those of you who love chocolate, intake with a high cocoa content can drastically improve the success of your weight loss diet. “What surprised us, the chocolate effect was real,” Bohannon said. “It is not enough to just consume chocolate, but in combination with exercise and carbohydrate reduction, our data shows that chocolate can be an accelerator of weight loss.” I believe if you eat dark chocolate in moderation while exercising daily, you should be fine to begin with.
