EPIC’s main role is to look at the relationship between diet, nutritional status, lifestyle and environmental factors and the incidence of cancer and other chronic diseases.

But what was surprising was that when waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio were separated, these measurements were strongly associated with a higher risk of death as well. In fact, a 2-inch increase in waist measurement increases the risk of death by 17% for men and 13% for women, regardless of how good their BMI is.
In fact, what’s really surprising is that the link between belly fat and death is strongest in people who are a healthy weight for their height.
“I was surprised that even people who would be considered normal weight in terms of them [body mass index] have a higher risk of death if their waist circumference increases,” said Tobias Pischon, MD, lead author of the study and member of the department of epidemiology at the German Institute of Human Nutrition (DIfE).
So what should you do? Research from 2003 shows that you can work on shedding belly fat with a combination of increasing your dietary fiber intake and doing some weight training.
