What to Have for Lunch? Try Peaches and Banana

If you’re looking for what to have for lunch, try peaches and bananas. Not only will it fill you up, you’ll get vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and still not gain weight. Not bad if you are like me, not so young and watch everything you eat.

Why not? After all, the body isn’t what it used to be, the food processor of a sixteen-year-old – or twenty-six, for that matter.

A cheeseburger or an Egusi/Watermelon soup with mashed yam is a good meal, but you don’t have to eat it all the time – unless, of course, you’re lucky enough to be a manual laborer.

But I’m not so lucky, because I mostly do sedentary jobs. It’s not that I don’t like my job, but I wish it came with some real physical activity – enough to work up a sweat and maintain constant weight, but not to the point where it wears out the ankles, knees and bones. I will need it when I reach the age of ninety, as will my non-family friends. Well, that is by the way.

For starters, peaches and bananas complement each other like water and cement. In combination they will eliminate your hunger and satisfy your appetite.

If you’re wondering where to get fresh peaches and bananas, stores like Big Y, Stop and Shop are my favorites. Find a store near you, where you can easily get a supply of fresh peaches and bananas.

Until I started writing this article, I never knew that peaches can rejuvenate the body, face, skin appearance, and can even slow down the aging process. You don’t need any more excuses to include peaches in your menu, do you?

One evening, I was looking for what to eat for lunch instead of almonds. I usually skip lunch because I don’t think lunch is important, especially if you are like me, with a sedentary lifestyle. I sat all day, occasionally getting up to stretch out a hand, but quickly sat back in the chair.

The bottom line is that I don’t do much and therefore don’t deserve much food. Some days, however, when I’m feeling hungry (not without guilt), I’ll drive to a nearby store and buy a packet or two of almonds. As soon as I get back to the car, my fingers will tear through the small plastic bags and nuts, three or five at a time, until I’m done. After that I would face the other pack and give it a shot like I did the first one. Each bag contains 130 calories, so together these small snacks give me 260 calories.

Often my hunger will disappear, allowing me to continue the whole day with my sedentary lifestyle sitting on my stool, sometimes standing up if I need to emphasize something when talking to parents and their children, doing the best I can able to alleviate, even if only temporarily, their physical and sometimes mental suffering.

Don’t get me wrong. There were times when I would go from one consulting room to another, across a short hallway to the refrigerator to select a vaccine or reach out to rummage through a wall cabinet for needles, syringes or gloves.

No one in their right mind would call any of these activities anything but sedentary, for which a heavy load of food, like pounded yams or garri, or rice or mutton or soup or fries or hamburgers or sandwiches, is unnecessary. That’s why I try to keep my lunch very simple and limited to almonds.

So, that afternoon when I was looking for something to eat instead of almonds, my mind turned to bananas and peaches. It’s not that I never eat bananas or peaches, but I never knew they could be a good substitute for my two packs of almonds at about 260 calories. Somewhere in my brain, bananas and peaches have been hiding in plain sight ever since I saw my son Jermane bite into a wedge of banana and my daughter Amy bite into a piece of peach.

“That’s all the peaches you bought?” I had asked Amy, when I saw her eating a big peach. ”Yes, father, sorry,” he said.

The next day at lunch, instead of buying two packs of almonds at the corner store, I went to the ‘Stop and Shop’ food store and picked out two ripe but firm peaches and a bunch of four ripe and firm bananas.

Back in my car, I looked under the seat and found a half-full bottle of water for me to wash the peaches with. I put a peach on a clean napkin in the front passenger seat and held the other, checking it again for dents and soft spots, which I don’t like in fruit.

Satisfied my teeth bit down and took a piece of juicy peach. Really delicious, refreshing, slightly sour taste! The soft texture of the skin made me want to hold on to the fruit a little longer, but hunger got the better of me.

Peaches are nutritious, with lots of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. I don’t think they are given the respect they deserve in the fruit family.

Bananas are a very popular and ubiquitous fruit, so there’s no need to go into detail about them, just to say that I take the time to pick my bananas because I want them the right way, not overripe or underripe, just ripe. , and strong and easy to peel from the top, not slippery. Like peaches, bananas contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

As usual the bananas did not disappoint, and I ate two of the four. Shortly after my hunger subsided, I began to experience post-gluttony despair.

Maybe I was overeating, the sugary foods I remember my grandmother warning me about when I was little. I had run away to live with him in my village in Akokwa, because I wanted to escape from my parents’ supervision. My mother in particular often comes to my room to check on me and ask, “Are you okay, my son?” even though all he wanted to know was who I was hanging out with. Grandma never cared about any of that; he would bring some bitter leaf soup with dried fish to me, his eighteen-year-old grandson: bitter leaf soup, cooked with dried fish.

Oh, I miss grandma. Forgive me where I have digressed, but I think you should understand the kind of person I am – at least a little of what I did as a child.

Forced by the kind of person I’ve become, I added the calories and cost of two peaches and two bananas. One peach, the size I ate, is about 70 calories, two of them, 140 calories. Let’s say a large banana contains 150 calories, two would contain 300 calories. Together, two large peaches and two humongous bananas add up to about 440 calories; not that expensive either – all for just $2.00.

Peaches and bananas fill the stomach better than two small packs of almonds. Next time you’re wondering what to eat for lunch, try two peaches and two bananas. I promise you will enjoy it. If you’re a weight watcher, don’t feel guilty; you will get a healthy meal and only consume about 500 calories.
