How many times do we get to the end of the day and think “I didn’t eat much food and I still can’t lose weight”? In my experience, this is very common. In the morning, many of us grab a cup of coffee as we run out the door. We get backed up at work and maybe skip lunch. Low and behold dinner and we were really starving! We justify overeating at dinner by telling ourselves that this is our only “real” meal of the day or that I haven’t eaten many calories today- how bad is that?? Truth be told- it was beyond bad- it was horrible. This eating pattern is an absolute weight killer!

Metabolism Crash!

One of the first important weight loss mistakes that many make is not eating a balanced breakfast. Most successful plans do not allow food after dinner. In this case, ten, twelve or more hours may pass between dinner and breakfast. This is good because our metabolism will naturally slow down overnight. We don’t need a lot of energy to sleep! Once we wake up and go about our day, our bodies need fuel – energy to move. What happens if we don’t give our body the energy it needs? We can’t sleep all day! A truly undesirable thing happens- our metabolism grinds to a halt. It is slow- meaning it breaks down nutrients/burns calories at a slower rate.(remember in a weight loss plan we want to burn calories fast!) In short, we are in hibernation mode. That’s not very helpful when we’re trying to burn as many calories as possible to lose weight. Start your day ready to lose weight- eat a protein dominated, no refined sugar/processed food, calorie controlled breakfast (about 200-350 calories).

Simple Solution!

We all understand that we need to eat fewer calories overall and control our portions to lose weight. The best weight loss plan will provide five to six small meals per day. This spreads calories, vitamins and minerals throughout the day. Your body will receive a constant input of vitamins and nutrients. This will prevent energy breakdowns, keep you full throughout the day – no hunger pangs and will help control cravings. Try to avoid “big” meals. Most of the better weight loss plans put healthy snacks between meals and provide three small meals.

Remember weight loss is a process and a journey towards better health. Commit every day to your goals, take small steps and before you know it you will be fit, energized and ready to tackle new challenges!
