Alternative Medicine, Home Remedies for Menstruation Relief
Menstruation is the term used for the natural monthly cycle in a woman’s body. A period is when an unfertilized egg is released from the reproductive system along with blood and some other tissue cells. This trend happens once a month. The flow is heavy on one particular day of the month. However, menstrual discomfort can usually last for three days.
The female reproductive system is amazing. Each month the ovaries produce one egg that is stored in the fallopian tubes. The wall of the uterus known as the endometrium thickens and there is increased blood circulation throughout the reproductive system. This is all in preparation for pregnancy. However, if the woman is not pregnant, then all these things need to be removed from the body. This is known as the period. Once the expulsion is done, the ovary produces a new egg and the cycle continues for another month.
Women may face some difficulties during their menstrual flow. There is increased moisture in the vaginal area, and there may be an infection. Women can experience fever, extreme pain in the groin area, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, etc. In some women the effects are more aggressive than others. And the most worrying thing is that the symptoms can recur month after month. The biological term for menstrual problems is dysmenorrhea.
In Ayurveda, menstruation (i.e. menstrual flow) is considered excess pitta flowing out of the body. It is called as King. Hence the menstrual flow is also called as Raja Pravritti. Although menstruation is a predominantly pitta phenomenon, effects on vata and kapha are also seen. Some women experience insomnia and mood swings during menstruation. This is vata vitiation. Some women gain weight. This is kapha vitiation.
