I believe we all know what fat means and I think it is best to express our children’s feelings. Fat looks and feels ugly. Peers don’t call your child obese, they call them fat. I realize that this expression is harsh but we are facing a current national health crisis and it is expected to get worse. According to a 2007 John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Human Nutrition study, “if obesity and overweight rates continue at current rates, by 2015, 75 percent of adults, and nearly 24 percent of US children and adolescents will be overweight overweight or obese.” Maybe we all need “in your face” reality. By the way, I would never directly tell any child that he/she is fat, but their friends will and so will their siblings.
Parents, you may believe that there is nothing you can do about it. The majority do nothing. If one or both of you are obese, you may feel you have no right to try to intervene. After all, your child will surely say to any sincere effort to help, “Look who’s talking!” -and you know, your son is right. If you can’t handle your overweight problem, you are not a creditable resource for a lawyer. Really? There is still hope.
If neither of you are fat, I think you believe you are a creditable source to offer support— more so than the fat parent. Still, there’s a lot to understand about your fat kid. They are emotionally sick. They often receive reminders that they are too big—their mirror broadcasts them; their peers at school relentlessly tease them and television and teen magazines remind them of their appearance.
Children do not focus on health issues; they focus on how they are perceived by their peers. Therefore, lectures about a potential problem (diabetes) have no effect and do not provide much motivation to lose weight. They want to be included, appreciated, and liked by their peers. They realize that their obesity prevents them from achieving this strong and normal need. At this juncture, they have a greater potential for depression and anxiety, which can lead to overeating.
Girls tend to internalize their distress through depression and low self-esteem and boys tend to externalize, perhaps by acting out, fighting, drug/alcohol use or other anti-social behaviour. They feel their normal childhood was stolen from them, their discontent is great, and their future is bleak. How do I know this? They have shared these feelings with me in psychotherapy. I feel their pain as their therapist.
With the expected caution advised, children should receive a thorough examination to rule out any medical issues that may be contributing to their weight status. When a medical issue exists, it is the joint responsibility of the doctor and the parents to help the child. Consult with other professionals such as nutritionists or dietitians. If no medical issue is seen in the etiology, parents need to carefully observe the lifestyle choices made by their children and themselves. This is easy to say, but very difficult to do. Understand that children, and teenagers now called teenagers (ages 11, 12, and 13), are not fully developed in self-discipline skills (psychologists call them self-regulatory traits) and perform poorly in monitoring their own behavioral choices. – Without nagging, encourage physical exercise by making it a family activity. Make a request for your child to join you, never make a request as the latter may trigger a power struggle. If you don’t get what you ask for, desire or want, you won’t feel disappointed if you don’t get what you asked for.
– Avoid constant discussions about diet. Most children and teenagers are aware of diet. If you push the issue, they are more likely to become oppositional and oppositional.
– As a family, learn about nutrition and exercise. They are more likely to cooperate.

– If your child contacts you and admits that he is being teased; listen, comfort, don’t lecture, don’t threaten to go to school and face teasing children, principals, teachers; just listen and calm down. Ask the child if you can help, and accept the answer.
– If the child asks for help, act according to your ability. If you need help, find resources in the community. Behavior modification programs have been shown to be effective for weight problems.
– If you suspect that your child has an eating disorder, such as compulsive eating, bulimia or hiding food in their room; get professional help.
Obesity in children, in most cases can be resolved. It requires a dedicated effort by parents. Once unhealthy eating patterns are established, they are difficult, but not impossible, to reverse. Parents need to be the ones to guide their children with this debilitating disorder. This must be the mind set of parents. Obesity can turn into a lifelong issue with serious consequences. If you depend on the child to do something about it, you have created the wrong mindset. If you think your child will “outgrow” the problem, you are wrong. As a parent, you must react as if your child has a treatable disease. There must be a discussion between Mom and Dad so that both will be on the same page for what integrated plan has been prepared. You must be in a concert. More than anything else, model what you want your child to see in your eating habits, exercise and lifestyle. Let them see you deny yourself that second serving of potatoes, get off the couch to walk, take the stairs instead of the elevator and wash your own car. Day by day, they will gradually witness good habits, and without a word, they will follow. Do it. Your child’s health, body image and self-esteem are worth the effort. Don’t you think so?
