I’m terrified of the very thought of a ‘message’ in a novel. In the small town of Larksville, the Pike household is hopelessly out of step with the every day rhythms of life after the tragic, accidental death of six-12 months-previous Janie Rose. Mrs. Pike seldom speaks, blaming herself, whereas Mr. Pike is forced to come out of his long, comfy silence. Then there may be 10 years old Simon, who’s abruptly with no child sister — and without understanding why she’s gone. Those closest to this shattered household should be taught to consolation them — and confront their own personal shadows of hidden grief. I learn her first book in my 20’s (If Morning Ever Comes) and liked it a lot! Through the years, I have continued to read every one among her books.
